Water Pollution

What is the sustainability issue?
Water pollution is becoming a sustainable issue in New Zealand. Most of the water in New Zealand is being polluted. This harms all the creatures that rely on water. If it kills all the aquatic animals, we will also die because they give 50% of oxygen. Water pollution disrupts the food chain as well.

What causes the issue? 

Water pollution occurs when we dump all our rubbish in the ocean. We discharge fossils in the ocean which makes the water dangerous for the creatures to rely on. Dairy farming runoff is one of the things that cause water pollution. Discharge of sewage in the sea is also one of the things that cause water pollution. One of the most known pollutants is the chemical runoff from crops in farms.

What is being done to solve the issue? 

Reduction of water usage in washing dishes and bathing. This reduces the amount of dirty water that needs treatment. This also prevents water shortage. We should never have a water shortage and if we have a water shortage, we will die of thirst. No disposal of waste in the water. These cause the aquatic animals to choke and die.

What else needs to be done to improve the issue?

Do not flush pills, liquid or powder medications or drugs down the toilet. Avoid using a garbage disposal. Keep solid wastes solid. Make a compost pile from vegetable scraps. Run the dishwasher or clothes washer only when you have a full load. This conserves electricity and water. Use the minimum amount of detergent and bleach when you are washing clothes or dishes. Use only phosphate-free soaps and detergents.
