Gummybear Experiment

Osmosis- osmosis is the movement of water molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. These molecules move through a semi-permeable membrane.

Semi-permeable- a substance that allows only some things to pass through. In osmosis, only water can pass through the semi-permeable membrane.

A solution with a high concentration of solutes is called Hypertonic when compared to a solution with a low concentration (Hypotonic). When two solutions with the same level of concentrations are compared, they're called Isotonic.

We did an experiment to see if the gummy bear has more concentration compared to the 3 solutions- salt water, sugar water, and normal water.
Hypothesis-

Gummybear in saltwater-  I think the gummy bear in the saltwater solutions neither shrivel nor will it become turgid.

Gummybear in sugar water- My hypothesis is that the gummy bear is hypertonic compared to the sugar water solution because the gummy bear has a more concentrated solute than the sugar water.

Gummybear in water- My hypothesis is that the gummy bear in normal water is hypertonic as there is no solute in normal water.
Results-

Gummybear in saltwater- The gummy bear shriveled in saltwater. The gummy bear was hypotonic compared to saltwater because there was more solute than water. The water in the gummy bear exit to meet equilibrium.

Gummybear in sugar water- The gummy bear in sugar water expanded. The gummy bear was hypertonic compared to the sugar water solution because there was more solute in the gummy bear than in the sugar water solution. The gummy bear absorbed the water in the sugar water solution to balance the amount of solute.

Gummybear in water- The gummy bear in normal water expanded. The gummy bear was hypertonic compared to water because there was no solute in the water so the gummy bear absorbed the water to balance the amount of solute.
