Acid Rain

What is acid rain and how does it form? When fossil fuels are released into the air and dissolve in the water in the clouds, water gets more acidic than normal. This process is called acid rain.

Why does acid rain matter? ikt matters because it harms the environment, plants, and aquatic life.

Today we are doing an experiment. Things we are going to use are blue litmus paper, bromothymol blue, universal indicator, leaf, piece of apple, calcium carbonate, and weigh boat.

The method for this:

  1. set up a Petri dish
  2. place everything in the petri dish
  3. add 1 spatula of sodium sulfide to weigh boats
  4. add 5 drops of sulfuric acid and quickly put the lid on
  5. watch and take photos

Observation-
Since the air in the petri dish was acidic, the blue litmus paper turned red from blue. The universal indicator turned red. The bromothymol blue is gradually turning yellow.
The apple and the leaf were to lose colour but we didn't have time to continue the experiment. The calcium carbonate was also supposed to harden.

  1. Well done Wajiha! Your summary and observations were great :) Next time, it would be great to have an explanation of what was happening and why it was happening.
