Far-right Threats to Maori Women

"Women who have done nothing other than visibly exist as Maori online increasingly face stalking, harassment, and threats of rape and death". Far-right is an article by Michelle Duff and Kirsty Johnston which was published on Friday, August 13, 2021, by The Press. This paper is written in-depth after weeks of research on who was being threatened and how they were being threatened. Women- particularly Maori women- are being threatened for what they are standing up for. Siouxsie Wiles, a Microbiologist, was also targeted after her work on Covid-19. She was bullied while having breakfast at a hotel and was live-streamed by a blogger. Because of these kinds of people, women don't feel safe in their own house.

If you or someone you know is also targeted, please seek help and speak up for the safety of you and everyone around you.

Let's Fight Racism

In Engish, we read some real-life stories of people who have faced discrimination. We had to then choose an article to reflect on. I chose the article Elena Gorolova, a Roma in the Czech Republic. Elena Gorolova is a Romani who lives in the Czech Republic. Sadly, she is a victim of discrimination and has been facing discrimination since she was a child. The doctors sterilized Romani women without telling them. They asked for their consent when they were in pain so that they couldn't read what the consent is about.  They did this because they didn't want the Roma population to go any higher. After Elena gave birth to her second child, the doctors sterilized her. The Czech people don't like the Romani. I chose this article because I like how Elena and the Roma people stood up for their rights and justice. Roma originated from the Punjab region in Nothern India as nomadic people and entered Europe between the 8th and 10th centuries C.E. The Europeans mistakenly believed they came from Egypt and called them Gypsies. "They didn't want any more Roma children to be born. I have experienced discrimination since I was a child... they just don't like the Roma people". This was a statement given by her. This quote demonstrates the theme ' the negative effects of discrimination on society' because it had a huge impact not only on one person but also on society. Elena wasn't the only victim, there were many other women who have been sterilized without their knowledge.
